Friend or Foe

一隻狐狸爬上籬笆的時候失足跌倒了（A  fox  slipped  in  climbing  a  fence）。當然，為了讓自己不會跌倒（To  save  him  from  falling），它趕緊抓住布滿荊棘的矮木叢（he  clutched  at  a  brier-bush），可是荊棘上的刺讓它的手掌都流了血（The  thorns  made  his  paws  bleed），它痛苦地（in  his  pain）大叫（he  cried  out）：天阿（Oh  dear!）！我找你幫忙（I  turned  to  you  for  help）你卻讓我比以前更糟糕（you  have  made  me  worse  off  than  I  was  before.）

「Yes,  my  friend!」

「你試著抓著我不讓自己跌倒的時候（when  you  tried  to  lay  hold  of  me），就犯了一個很大的錯誤（You  made  a  big  mistake.）。我自己卻會把每個人都抓住（I  lay  hold  of  everyone  myself.）」荊棘這麼說著。

這件事情描述出某些人的愚昧（The  incident  illustrated  the  folly），哪些人呢？那些找尋別人幫忙（those  who  run  for  aid  to  people），卻沒想到這些人有著傷害性大過助益性的本性（whose  nature  it  is  to  hurt  rather  than  to  help）
