Andrew Rolfe, president of Gap`s International division, said the brand was targeted at "men and women aged from their late 20s to their mid-to-late 40s" living and working in urban areas.
Marketing hype aside, a look around the store revealed relatively low prices for its shirts, jackets and ties in somber hues in a part of town that boasts Japan`s priciest real estate.
Rolfe said it was part of the strategy in competing with Japanese brands such as Tomorrowland and Ships, in addition to foreign rivals such as Burberry.
"In this area there`s incredibly sophisticated European fashion, but the price points are breathtaking," he said.

Large-sized people though may struggle to get into Banana Republic clothes. Rolfe, a tall, well-built man, said he certainly could not get into them due to its deliberate policy of offering "100-percent Japanese fit" sizes.
"We launched Gap here 10 years ago and didn`t do Japanese-only fits. We had to make that change, and when we did it really boosted our business. That`s why we`re launching 100-percent Japanese fits," he said.
