learning third language???

Hi, I am thinking about learning thrid language, but i don't know which one is more practical and spoken more by people...
German, Spanish, Italian, or French..
help me
  • I think it's Spanish, but it also depends on where do you wanan work. If you wanan work in Taiwan, I guess English and Japanese...in US..dunno...
  • spanish is major in the US
  • Well...Spanish and French are pretty popular in America but it doesn't seem that useful when you are trying to get a job...I haven't seen that many companies that are looking for people who can speak Spanish or French specifically...

Although studying German might sound weird to you, but just keep in mind that Germany’s economy has always been the 3rd strongest in the world, following right behind the US and Japan.

    yeah, i agree with "Chowson"...
    Spanish is popular in USA...
However, German might be useful when you are going to look for a new job! So if i were you, i wil learn German.

now, i am learning Japanese, but i found that most of Japaneses working in worldwide famous companies can speak English very well...so it seems that Japanese is not so popular as before...
  • Kenbebo...

Oh shit, man...I am learning Japanese too...too late to switch now...

Well, that depends on what kind of job you are looking for. Although many Japanese speak English, when you are assigned to Japan, being able to speak their language is definitely a big plus for you. Same goes to other languages.
Spanish is very very useful for companies involved in Latin American market. Think of these followings:
    1. Miami is known as "Capital of Latin America," "Financial Capital of Latin America," and "Gateway to Latin America." Many multinational companies, including IBM, HP, Gap, Oracle, Komatsu, Acer..., set up their regional headquarters there. Bilingual (Spanish/English) is (almost) essential there.
    2. More and more Taiwanese companies are searching for Spanish employees cause Latin America is an emerging market. I have seen many Taiwanese companies looking for Spanish translators.
    3. Free Trade Area of Americas (FTAA) will be created by 2005.

I have taken my cousin's <Luxe's, who is also on the board and taught me a lot:)> suggestion to learn Spanish for some time now and am thinking to study German in the near future.
  • Y&R,

You are Luxe's cousin?!...no wonder man...whenever I read your messages, they always reminded me of Luxe…indeed, I thought Luxe = "Y&R"...
  • I agree with Chowson...

Well I just started my German lessons, as I've been learning Japanese, German could be counted as my 4th language.

I think both Spanish and German are not bad choices, but German is more widely used in business field. Even you're an engineer person, German has developed very high techology too.(my b/f is studying engineering, and most of his professors are German.)

And by the way my parents just visited Europe (for business purpose and not for the first time), they've been always encourage me to learn German as it's very well known by European people.

    Chowson,
Huh? You thought I was Luxe? Oh, man, this is not good! Did you see my posts on the potential war between U & I? Well, Luxe hated me writing those.
I don't come this board often but I am house sitting for her who is currently on a business trip in Europe.

Just out of curiosity, what does Luxe do for living? I mean, what kind of job does she have?

I want to know because from the messages that she has posted, she always sounds very knowledgeable and seems to know everything!…It’s just amazing…
  • Looks like I am not the only one who thinks/ used to think Y&R=Luxe? You two just sound so similar....haaa.

I hope she won't kill me for writing this or for sounding similar to her (we grew up together, closer than she with her siblings). She works for a major think tank headquarted in NYC, analyzing corporate strategy, clients including Fortune 500 companies. Being a business consultant, she probably can answer your questions regarding all kinds of industries, from aerospace to telecommunication. I can only say this much and should let her answer the specific.

Um....how can she be working for a company that is located in NYC but yet live in FL?...

She must fly a lot like the.....

She does fly a lot!! The company's headquarter is located in NYC but she works at one of the branches. Also most of the time she works from home. (Isn't that great?) Hope this answers your question.
