Taiwan will be the home of a wondrous Chinese "Disneyland" by 1996, the Republic of China`s Tourism Bureau announced.
The planned amusement park is part of a massive recreation area project to be built in Houli, Taichung County. The area will occupy about 610 acres. The state-run Taiwan Sugar Corp. will offer its farm in Yuehmei for the required land.
The project will be Taiwan`s largest tourism industry investment of recent years, and the Tourism Bureau is considering partial funding from the private sector. Total cost of the project is estimated at US$500 million.
Included in the project will be the giant amusement park--which officials claim will be on par with Disneyland--recreation facilities, hotel complex, scenic farm plantation, and an agricultural education center.
The amusement park itself will be similar in size and amenities to Disneyland in Los Angeles, the bureau noted. Taiwan will acquire the required technology from either the United States or Japan.
