Well, no matter what you do, make sure you are doing the things you enjoy and be good at by working hard.
My suggestions:
0. Research. If you're smart and really interested in research, you should ignore everything anyone else has said and just concentrate on getting to the top of your field. There is always high demand for top research people, no matter what area you're in. Be it economics, microbiology, digital signal processing, or physics, you can at least get a research position somewhere with reasonably good pay and a steady job.
1. Biotech. Obviously the whole world's population is aging and the demand for drugs or bioecltronics that slows down the aging or treats diseases will only increase.
2. computer networking. Internet has been a successful tool in reducing cost and improving performance, yet many traditional industries still haven't taken the advantage of it. Many internet companies have turned profitible last year or so, and the demand for engineers who can help companies to reduce cost and/or improve preformance will be hot stock again.
3. Niche area that has little competition. You need to be more aggressive and explore the market. You'll find niche markets that there is enough money to be made. Following the crowd is the stupidest thing in investing either your money or your future.
