MBA選校問題~  (Luxe, would you help me?)

1.  GPA:  2.97  (extraordinary,  isn`t  it  ^^"), 
                        --  國立政治大學商學院資訊管理系
2.  GMAT:  730 
3.  TOEFL:  267
4.  W/E:  (from  the  latest)
  --  Project  manager  of  the  Asia  trade  office 
        of  State  of  Louisiana,USA.    (from  now  on 
        till  next  Autumn)
  --  3  year  product  manager  in  a  multinational 
        comapny  of  consumer  electronics.
  --  1  year  for  entrepreneurship  (started  a 
        dot.com  and  then  sold  it)
  --  1  year  International  OEM  sales  of  a  local 
        IT  company.
5.Essays:  Let`s  assume  that  I  can  hand  out
                    above-average  but  not  outstanding
                    articles.
6.Recommodations:
    1.  My  direct  supervisor  (a  Marketing 
          V.P.)  of  the  consumer  electronics.
          Best  praise  from  her  is  foretelled.
    2.  The  director  (supreme  head)  of  the  trdae 
          office 
          His  comments  "may"  be  strongly  positive.
    3.  N/A  yet.  If  it  will  be  required,  I  do 
          not  think  I  can  get  one  comparable  to 
          the  above  two.

That  is  it,  please  bring  forth  the  schools  of  which  you  think  would  be  my  match.  Elucidating  analyses  are  most  welcome.

1.  I  am  29  years  old;  next  year  when  I  enter  the  school  I  will  be,  of  course,  30.

2.  GPA:  It  is  a  2.97/4.0  ，and  I  know  that  it  is  amusingly  low  for  admission  committes  of  Top  B-schools.

3.  GMAT:  Q50,  V38.  And  I  realize  that  I  can  not  count  on  this  score  too  much.

4.  My  ultimate  goal  is  starting  a  company,  which  provdes  entertaining  products/services.  Be  they  softwares,  consumer  electronics,  or  performance  arts,  as  long  as  they  are  profitable  and  cheer  my  customers  up.

5.  My  quantitive  skills,  contrast  with  GMAT`s  indication,  are  actually  poor.  Moreover,  I  have  never  liked  Math,  just  as  it  has  never  liked    me.

6.  I  LOVE  marketing  from  my  heart.  And  I  believe  I  can  learn  it  very  well  even  competiting  with    intelligent  students.

7.  Nevertheless,  I  want  to  face  my  weakness.  Establishing  solid  financial  skills  for  MY  company  is  a  goal  must  be  achieved,while  developing  advanced  marketing  skills  is  an  important  but  not  imperative  factor  when  I  evaluate    b-schools.  One  condition:  The  quantative  method  must  not  be  too  heavy,  otherwise  I  may  end  up  with  many  F.

8.  Why  consulting  firms:  I  heard  that  in  best  consulting  firms,  my  scope  would  be  considerably  widen  and  strong  social  network  could  be  built  much  more  easily.  Scope  and  networking,  without  a  question,  are  vital  for  entrepreneurship.


9.  "Rural  or  Urban?"  I  can  not  care  less  about  this  question.  I  am  pliable  to  environments.

10.  What  are  the  schools  I    had  in  mind  before  receiving  your  reply:
 
      Kellogg  :  The  only  problem  is  that  my
                            chance  is  slim.
      Tuck  :  Its  tight-knit  student  community 
                    provokes  my  aspiration.                       
      Stern:  Considering  placement  rate  in  NY,  I 
                    think  it  is  an  good  choice
      UCLA:  I  heard  it  is  excel  in  Hi-Tech 
                  marketing. 
                  Just  wondering  whether  what  I  heard 
                  is  TRUE  or  not.

1.  Should  my  GPA  be  vidicated  proactively?  How?

2.  I  don`t  have  a  US  citizenship.  Does  this  disadvantage  impede  my  getting  a  placement  in  a  US  consulting  firm  even  if  I  get  my  MBA  from  a  top-tier  school?  If  the  answer  is  yes.  Is  any  particular  school  more  capable  to  diminish  this  disadvantage  than  are  others?

3.  "For    an    MBA    student,    在MC只待3年略嫌短",  would  you  please  expound  on  this?

4.  What  are  the  relative  difficulty  levels,  for  me  to  be  admitted,  of  Wharton,  Kellogg,  Tuck,  and  Michigan?  Knowing  this  is  not  a  question  with  "correct  answer",  I  just  want  to  hear  your  estimation,  by  instinct  would  be  okay.

5.  I  am  very  good  at  story  telling  (well,at  least  with  Chinese  I  am),  turning  my  real  experience  into  stories  to  vivid  to  be  regarded  as  truth.  Is  it  okay  to  answer  the  essay  questions  by  telling  my  stories?  What  if  the  admission  committees  question  the  reality  behind  the  stories  (although  there  are  nothing  but  truth.)

6.  Shall  I  clearly  indentify  the  names  of  the  companies,  which  are  all  highly  esteemed,  in  my  essays  and  interviews?  Won`t  such  a  behavior  make  me  seemed  arrogant  and  over-confident?

7.  One  of  my  best  friend,  a  MBA  from  Maryland,  said:  "Top  consulting  firms,  filled  with  risk  averting  mechanisms,  will  eventually  retard  my  inclination  and  ability  to  work  on  entrepreneurship."  Agreeing  that  consulting  firms  usually  avoid  risks  for  their  clients,  I  am  not  sure  whether  working  for  one  is  beneficial  to  my  ultimate  goal  now.  What  would  you  say?

Btw,  here  I  would  like  to  address  my  reason  that  I  do  not  take  HBS  and  Stanford  into  my  consideration:  I  believe  they  are  schools  for  geniuses.  Unlike  you,  I  am  just  not  the  type.  :)

Thank  you  for  your  prompt  reply.

1.  Sorry  for  the  the  "vindicate",  I  just  failed  to  choose  a  right  word. 
Rephrased  question:  Shall  I  actively  explain  that  why  I  got  a  very  low  GPA?  If  I  shall  do  so.  How?  Attaching  my  explanation  to  the  GPA  transcript?  Expaining  in  essays?  Or  keeping  this  issue  for  interviews  (in  case  I  can  get  interviews)? 

2.  Regarding  the  attitudes-toward-risk  issue,  I  apologize  for  my  comment  if  it  irated  you. 
However,  according  to  my  readings  and  friends  who  worked  for  consulting  firms  in  Taiwan(DTT  or  Accenture).  I  thought  that  consultants  relish  less-risky  solutions.  Indeed,  the  traits  you  mentioned  are  essential  to  be  a  good  consultant.  But,  isn`t  it  true  that  consulting  firms,  like  other  business  agencies:  AD,  PR  and  investing  agencies,  tend  to  conceive  consevative  solution  to  minimize  possible  risk  for  both  their  customers  and  for  themselves? 
Please  understand  that  I  am  not  arguing  but  just  confused  here.  In  fact,  if  I  am  wrong,  I  will  aspire  to  be  a  consultant  more.

    Your  elaborating  on  the  "risk-averse"  issue  eased  my  last  reservation 

about  pursuing  a  position  in  consulting  firms  and  therefore  greatly  swayed  me  back  to  the  schools  I  have  admired  for  years.

    Combined  my  other  info-resources  with  your  suggestion.  I  revised  my  list  of  targeted  schools:
[Northwestern,  Dartmouth,  Michigan,  UV,  Yale,  UCLA,  UNC.]
    Acknowledging  there  is  not  an  "absolutely  safe"  school  in  the  list,  I    like  to  take  the  risk  of  re-applying  next  year  rather  than  to  enroll  myself  in  a  school  that  I  don`t  really  crave  for.

 
    Although  the  website  is  not  a  fitting  place  for  my  problem,I  am  glad 

that  I  posted  my  problem  here  and  received  the  the  most  treasured  advice 

among  all  I`ve  collected  hitherto.  Before  I  close  this  discussion  thread  with  sincere  appreciation,  I  would  like  to  ask  for  your  permission  for  me  to  rewrite  it  in  a  Q&A  form  and  then  post  the  revision  onto  a  BBS  forum  regarding  Advanced-Study-Abroad.  If  I  do  so,  your  advice  would  be  utilized  by  directing  numberous  Taiwanese  MBA  wannabes  who  are  as  clueless  as  I  was.  I  plan  to  implement  this  task  after  submitting  my  applications.  What  is  your  say?

    我去年底拜訪過學校了，A2是個很不錯的地方，該有的都市機能都有，又不會擁擠雜亂，我滿喜歡的。不過天氣真的很冷的樣子~~

    我還沒有確定要去哪所學校啦，以天氣來講，我比較想去UCLA；而以城市和學風來講，我又比較想去Darden。不過一直有人勸我不要想那麼多，他們認為UM比上述兩所學校要好很多，所以... 

    選校還真是一件難事啊~~
